How endoscopy works

Follow the scope.

An endoscope is a soft tube as thin as a finger, with a light and a camera at its tip. Scroll to follow its path. Dr Muguti sees the lining on screen in real time, takes tiny samples and treats many problems without a single cut.

01Gastroscopy · upper gut

The food pipe

The scope passes gently over the tongue and down the oesophagus. You breathe normally throughout. This is where reflux damage, narrowing and swallowing problems are found.

02Gastroscopy

The stomach

A little air opens the stomach so every fold can be seen. Ulcers, inflammation and bleeding points show up clearly. Bleeding can often be stopped there and then.

The duodenum

The first part of the small bowel. Samples taken here help diagnose coeliac disease and other causes of anaemia. The whole upper check usually takes 5 to 15 minutes.

04Colonoscopy · lower gut

The rectum

For a colonoscopy you are sedated and comfortable. The scope enters from below, where piles, fissures and causes of bleeding are checked first.

05Colonoscopy

The colon

The scope travels the full length of the large bowel. Polyps, small growths that can turn into cancer over years, are lifted off painlessly during the same test.

The caecum

The start of the large bowel, and the end of the journey. You hear what was found before you go home, in plain words, with photos where useful.
