Before

Nothing to eat for 6 hours before. You may sip water until 2 hours before. Tell us at booking if you take blood thinners, iron or diabetes medicine.

2

During

You lie on your left side with a small mouth guard. The tube does not affect your breathing. If a biopsy is taken, you won't feel it.

3

After

You rest for about an hour while sedation wears off. Dr Muguti explains what he saw. Your throat may feel slightly sore for a day.

4

Going home

If you had sedation, an adult must take you home. Do not drive, sign documents or drink alcohol for 24 hours.

Questions

What patients ask us most.

Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp.

Do I need a referral letter?

No. You can book directly. If your doctor has written a referral letter, bring it or send a photo on WhatsApp, because it helps us prepare.

What if Dr Muguti is called to an emergency on my day?

Emergencies come first, so occasionally an appointment has to move. The practice will message you as early as possible and offer the next available time. Your place is kept.

Are you open on Sundays?

The rooms are closed on Sundays for routine appointments, but Dr Muguti attends emergencies every day. Call +263 77 256 0415.

Will the procedure hurt?

Most people feel little or nothing. For a gastroscopy you can choose a throat spray or sedation. For a colonoscopy we use sedation. Dr Muguti will talk you through your options.

What is sedation? Is it the same as being put to sleep?

Sedation is medicine through a small drip that makes you relaxed and drowsy. You breathe on your own and wake quickly. It is lighter than a general anaesthetic, which is used for surgery.

Can I drive home afterwards?

Not if you had sedation or an anaesthetic. An adult must take you home and you should not drive for 24 hours.

Do you accept medical aid?

We work with Zimbabwean medical aid societies. Bring your card and we'll confirm cover and any shortfall before your procedure.

How much does it cost?

Costs depend on the procedure, sedation and whether biopsies are taken. Ask for a written quote when you book.

When will I get my results?

You hear what was seen before you leave. Biopsy results come from the laboratory, usually within one to two weeks, and are discussed with you at follow-up.

I have diabetes or take blood thinners. Is that a problem?

Not usually, but your medicines may need adjusting before the procedure. Tell us when you book so we can give you specific instructions.
